A Day in the Life of a Sales Tax Manager

That’s Nice, But What’s the Job?

In short, as the Sales Tax Manager you will be leading a 3 person team that manages the sales tax compliance, planning, audit management, reporting and sales tax operational systems at DriveTime.

In long, the Sales Tax Manager is responsible for:

  • Researching and analyzing changes in various state sales/use tax laws as well as advise management on indirect tax regulations, trends, and risks.
  • Providing guidance to AP, Retail Operations, Accounting, FP&A and Real Estate and other departments within the Company to reduce future audit assessments related to sales/use taxes.
  • Assisting with responses to tax inquiries from customers, vendors, and internal departments within DriveTime.
  • Identifying and claiming sales tax refunds, while mitigating over and underpayment risk.
  • Reviewing vendor contracts that may have indirect tax implications.
  • Working with outside lawyers and CPAs on special projects.
  • Responsible for monthly indirect tax journal entries and related account reconciliations.
  • Effectively representing the sales tax team in business advisory meetings either as participant or as leader.
  • Supporting continuing innovations in tax technology as a way to streamline department tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ensuring appropriate compliance and accounting procedures/processes are in place.
  • Evaluating and improving upon existing accounting policies, reports and reconciliations

So What Kind of Folks Are We Looking for?

  • Love of leading. You will be the leader for the sales tax function at DriveTime and will be responsible for team development and growth.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ability to talk and write from a place of confidence and knowledge for a wide variety of audiences, including Accounting, IT, Operations and Management.
  • Killer analytical and reporting abilities. You’ll need the capability to analyze large amounts of financial data and spot trends for further review.
  • A mind for the details. Okay we know “detail-oriented” is on about every job description – but we really mean it!
  • Agile in a fast-past environment. We move, and we move quickly. Thriving in an environment that never stops, is a must.
  • Plays well with others. You will be working in a high-functioning team environment. We work together in order to win together.  We value problem solvers and pragmatism.
  • Collaborative contributor. You need the ability to coordinate and supervise multiple levels of team members while remaining an individual contributor to the team.
  • Intellectual curiosity. Why? What? How? Motor vehicle sales taxes are complex and more unique than other types of general sales taxes.  You will not run out of questions anytime soon.  Do you find yourself always wanting to learn more and broaden your knowledge base?  If so, this could be the role for you.
  • Operate autonomously. This isn’t a “hold your hand” kind of role. We give you autonomy to be creative in your space and do your thing as you lead the team and develop best practices for the department.  We need an individual that is self-motivated to get the work done when the business needs it and get the work done well.

The Specifics.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or similar field.
  • 6-8+ years overall experience in multi-state sales and use tax compliance, general deductions, research, analysis and exemptions.
  • Industry experience required with evidence of progressive growth and promotion.
  • Strong general understanding of Generally Accepting Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with Vertex O Series software or similar.
  • Advanced excel skills.
