A Day in the Life of an Assistant Director, Telecom Engineer

That’s Nice, But What’s the Job?

 

In short, as the Assistant Director of Telecom, you will be responsible for the engineering, designing and implementing all or part of the organization's complex unified communication infrastructure and call center technologies in line with business needs and requirements. In this role, you’ll work with internal and external teams; apply advanced technical knowledge to solve moderately complex problems; and manage projects and determines approach, resources, schedules and outcomes.

 

In long, our Assistant Director of Telecom is responsible for:

  • Supporting the PBX infrastructure, Voice over IP, IVR, dialer, voicemail services, call routing technologies, and related telephony or unified communications services (the infrastructure may include multiple technologies from multiple on premise vendors and integrated cloud based solutions/services).
  • Employing recognized best practices to minimize unplanned service outages and maintain system/service availability.
  • Coordinating with other IT functional areas on systems upgrades or modifications, to minimize disruptions.
  • Troubleshooting complex problems that have escalated within the telecommunications function.
  • Leading teams of telecommunications professionals involved in the design of complex configurations or in the evaluation and administration of the telecommunications systems.
  • Cross departmental collaboration, and conducting briefings and meetings; maintaining frequent contact with other managers across the department.

  • Works well in a time crunch. There will be multiple time sensitive requirements and you’ll need the ability to meet deliverable due dates.
  • Fantastic problem solver. Your job is not only to find the problem, but more importantly, find the solution.

The Specifics.

  • 10 or more years of progressive unified communication and/or network technical experience, preferably in call center environment.
  • 2+ years' experience in leadership (project or engineering) or management of engineering teams.
  • In-depth expertise with unified communications systems and related call center systems.
  • Deep experience with setup and troubleshooting SIP and H.323 signaling.
  • Demonstrated strength in monitoring Unified Communications systems and services.
  • Experience working with communications carrier vendors.
  • Ability to mentor and direct associates in technical and career advancement
  • Work under high stress troubleshooting sessions/calls.
  • Experience with engaging, communicating and partnering internally and with strategic vendors.
  • Dashboard reporting skill sets. Visio, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strategic ability to identify and execute on new technology or solutions.
